# Security Summary - API Authentication Protection

## Changes Made
Added session-based authentication protection to maintenance API endpoints to prevent unauthorized access.

## Security Measures Implemented

### 1. Centralized Authentication Helper (`api/require_admin.php`)
- ✅ Secure session configuration (httponly, samesite=Lax)
- ✅ Strict type checking (`!==`) to prevent type juggling attacks
- ✅ Proper HTTP 401 status code for unauthorized access
- ✅ Consistent JSON error responses
- ✅ Immediate exit after authentication failure

### 2. Protected Endpoints
The following maintenance APIs now require admin authentication:
- `api/gestisci_impostazioni.php` - System settings management
- `api/ripeti_comanda.php` - Print job resend
- `api/genera_report.php` - Business report generation
- `api/gestisci_dati.php` - Data management (already protected)

### 3. Unprotected Endpoints (By Design)
The following operational APIs remain accessible without authentication:
- `api/cerca_prodotto.php` - Product search (read-only, used by POS)
- `api/salva_ordine.php` - Order creation (operational, used by POS)

**Rationale**: These APIs are used by the POS system (`cassa.php`) which does not require authentication for operational staff use.

## Security Considerations

### Session Security
- Session cookies configured with secure parameters matching `check_login.php`
- Session regeneration happens at login time (in `check_login.php`) to prevent session fixation
- Strict comparison used for authentication check to prevent type juggling

### Authentication Flow
1. User logs in via `login.php` → `check_login.php`
2. On successful login, `$_SESSION['loggedin']` is set to `true`
3. Protected APIs check this flag via `require_admin.php`
4. Unauthorized requests receive HTTP 401 with error code 4001

### Known Limitations
1. **No Session Timeout**: Sessions persist until browser closure (lifetime=0). Consider adding session timeout for enhanced security.
2. **LAN-Only Security**: This implementation is designed for LAN environments. Additional security (HTTPS, CSRF protection) recommended for internet-facing deployments.
3. **Single User**: Authentication is password-based for a single admin user. No user management or role-based access control.

## Vulnerabilities Addressed
- ✅ **Unauthorized Data Access**: Prevents unauthenticated users from accessing maintenance APIs
- ✅ **Unauthorized Data Modification**: Blocks unauthenticated modification of system settings
- ✅ **Unauthorized Print Operations**: Prevents unauthorized print job submissions
- ✅ **Business Data Exposure**: Protects report generation from unauthorized access

## Vulnerabilities Not Addressed (Out of Scope)
- Session timeout/expiry
- CSRF protection
- Rate limiting
- User management/audit logging
- POS endpoint protection (by design - operational requirement)

## Testing
- ✅ Unit tests verify authentication logic
- ✅ Integration tests verify HTTP 401 responses
- ✅ Manual verification confirms protected endpoints block access
- ✅ Manual verification confirms operational endpoints remain accessible

## Recommendations for Future Improvements
1. Add session timeout mechanism
2. Implement CSRF tokens for state-changing operations
3. Add audit logging for authentication attempts
4. Consider protecting POS endpoints with a separate authentication mechanism if needed
5. Implement rate limiting to prevent brute force attacks on protected endpoints

## Compliance
This implementation follows PHP security best practices for session management in LAN environments:
- Secure cookie parameters
- Strict type checking
- Proper HTTP status codes
- Consistent error responses
- Session regeneration on authentication
