# Security Summary - XSS Protection (Issue #7)

## Overview
This document summarizes the XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) protection measures implemented in the RICEVUTE application.

## Implemented Protections

### 1. Content Security Policy (CSP)
All main application pages now include CSP headers in report-only mode:

- **admin.php**: Monitors for policy violations in the admin interface
- **report.php**: Monitors for policy violations in the report page (with CDN exception for html2pdf.js)
- **cassa.php**: Monitors for policy violations in the cash register page

The CSP is configured to:
- Allow resources only from the same origin (`default-src 'self'`)
- Allow inline scripts and styles (required for existing functionality)
- Allow images from self and data URIs
- Allow external scripts only from trusted CDN (cdnjs.cloudflare.com) for report.php

**Report-Only Mode**: The CSP is in report-only mode, which means:
- Violations are logged but not blocked
- Allows monitoring without risk of breaking functionality
- Can be converted to enforcement mode by removing `-Report-Only` from the header

### 2. Client-Side Output Escaping

#### admin.js
- Uses `createTextCell()` helper function that assigns values via `textContent`
- Never uses `innerHTML` with user-controlled data
- All database values are safely rendered as text

#### report.js
- Has `escapeHtml()` utility function that properly escapes special characters
- Uses `escapeHtml()` for all product descriptions from the database
- Numeric values are safely converted to numbers before rendering

#### cassa.js
- Has `escapeHtml()` utility function with comprehensive character escaping
- Uses `escapeHtml()` for product descriptions in the order table
- All user input is properly sanitized before DOM insertion

### 3. Server-Side Output Escaping

All PHP files that render database content use `htmlspecialchars()` with proper flags:

#### admin.php
```php
htmlspecialchars($errore_caricamento, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8')
```

#### report.php
```php
htmlspecialchars($label, ENT_QUOTES | ENT_SUBSTITUTE, 'UTF-8')
htmlspecialchars($today, ENT_QUOTES)
```

#### cassa.php
```php
htmlspecialchars($tavolo['ID_Tavolo'], ENT_QUOTES | ENT_SUBSTITUTE, 'UTF-8')
htmlspecialchars($tavolo['Nome_Tavolo'], ENT_QUOTES | ENT_SUBSTITUTE, 'UTF-8')
htmlspecialchars($e->getMessage(), ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8')
```

#### login.php
```php
htmlspecialchars($_SESSION['login_error'], ENT_QUOTES | ENT_SUBSTITUTE, 'UTF-8')
```

### 4. API Endpoints
All API endpoints return JSON responses only:
- `api/cerca_prodotto.php`: Returns JSON
- `api/genera_report.php`: Returns JSON
- `api/gestisci_dati.php`: Returns JSON
- `api/salva_ordine.php`: Returns JSON
- `api/ripeti_comanda.php`: Returns JSON

JSON responses are safe from XSS when properly consumed by JavaScript (using `response.json()`).

## Security Vulnerabilities Fixed

### Issue #7: XSS via Database Content
**Risk**: High - Could allow execution of arbitrary JavaScript in admin and report pages
**Status**: ✅ Fixed

**Original Problem**:
- User-controlled data from database could contain malicious scripts
- If rendered unsafely in the browser, scripts would execute

**Solution**:
1. Client-side: All database values rendered using `textContent` or `escapeHtml()`
2. Server-side: All PHP variables escaped with `htmlspecialchars()`
3. CSP headers added to provide defense-in-depth

## Testing Recommendations

See `docs/XSS_TESTING.md` for detailed testing procedures.

**Quick Test**:
1. Insert a product with description: `<script>alert('XSS')</script>`
2. View the product in admin.php
3. Generate a report including that product in report.php
4. Expected: Script appears as text, does not execute

## Future Recommendations

### 1. Convert CSP to Enforcement Mode
Once monitoring confirms no legitimate violations, remove `-Report-Only`:
```php
header("Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; ...");
```

### 2. Remove Inline Scripts/Styles
To strengthen CSP, consider:
- Moving inline scripts to external `.js` files
- Using nonces or hashes for necessary inline scripts
- Moving inline styles to external `.css` files

### 3. Input Validation
While output escaping prevents XSS, also consider:
- Validating input format before saving to database
- Rejecting or sanitizing suspicious characters
- Using prepared statements for all database queries (already implemented)

### 4. Additional Security Headers
Consider adding:
```php
header("X-Content-Type-Options: nosniff");
header("X-Frame-Options: DENY");
header("X-XSS-Protection: 1; mode=block");
header("Referrer-Policy: strict-origin-when-cross-origin");
```

## Compliance

These XSS protections help meet requirements for:
- OWASP Top 10 (A03:2021 - Injection)
- PCI DSS Requirement 6.5.7
- GDPR Article 32 (Security of processing)

## Maintenance

To maintain XSS protection:
1. ✅ Always use `textContent` or escaping functions when rendering user data
2. ✅ Always use `htmlspecialchars()` when echoing variables in PHP
3. ✅ Never trust user input, even from database
4. ✅ Test new features with XSS payloads before deployment
5. ✅ Review CSP violation reports regularly
